It’s that time of year again… the nights are drawing in and you can feel the winter chill in the air. Summer now seems like a distant memory, but don’t despair… With winter comes Christmas and with Christmas comes DECORATIONS (one of our favourite things!). It’s time to start thinking about the big day, buying presents and checking whether your Christmas tree has survived the year in the attic. Or maybe you’re going for the real thing this year, in which case it’s time to start researching the best Christmas trees and looking around your favourite garden centres. Either way, you are going to need decorations for your tree, so we have put together a no nonsense guide on how to make sure your tree looks the part this year.
STEP 1 – Hanging your Christmas tree lights
Christmas tree lights tend to come with either green or white wiring. Make sure you choose the wire that matches the colour of your tree, so it can be hidden as well as possible. Start at the bottom of the tree and work your way up, then when you reach the top work your way back down again. A good tip is to turn on the lights and check the positioning after every 2 or 3 wraps, you can then make small adjustments without having to unwrap large sections of lights.
So which lights should you choose?
Incandescent Christmas Lights
These lights are available in lots of different sizes and colours. They give off a small amount of heat when they are on, which is great if you have a real tree, as this helps to release the pine fragrance associated with Christmas.
LED Christmas Lights
LED lights are a newer type of Christmas light and are a very popular choice due to the range of colours, shapes and styles on offer. You can get white, multi-coloured, or frosted all with a variety of light settings. Or, if you want to go for something a bit different why not try the pearl cap or poinsettia lights to add some real style to your tree.
It is worth noting that LED Christmas lights are more efficient than traditional incandescent lights, so could save you some pennies on your electricity bill! They are also fire-safe and do not release any heat, giving you and your family peace of mind during the festive season.
Pre-Lit Christmas Trees
Another option is to go for a tree that comes with lights already fitted. This is a great idea for busy people who need to save time, but still want the full Christmas tree setup in their home. Ranges are available in all sorts of styles and sizes, so come into our store and see if your perfect pre-lit Christmas tree is waiting for you. It could save you much needed time to spend on other essential Christmas duties.
The next step is to add the garlands to your tree. There are loads and loads of different types of garlands available, ranging from coloured ribbons to tinsel, but make sure they match the colour scheme you have decided to go with. Our top tip is to use a combination of different garland styles on your tree, for example ribbons, foil and beads, which will add variety and help your tree to look fabulous!
Once you are happy with your lights and garlands, you can start adding decorations to your tree. This is where you can really personalize your tree, with colours and style to make it your own. Collecting decorations year and year can help to create a real tradition in your household, and can give your tree a unique style which reflects your family. Place your favourite pieces on the tree first, spacing these out so that they are well positioned and clearly visible. The less important (filler) decorations, can be placed last to fill the gaps and even out the layout.
Make sure your children join in the fun by letting them add decorations to the tree. You can even make some decorations with them, to further personalize the look. Don’t worry, once they’re in bed you can apply some repositioning, if need be!
Christmas is without a doubt the most magical time of the year and putting up your Christmas tree is when the magic starts, so make sure the occasion is shared by all the family. Have fun and Merry Christmas!
