Say hello to Spring with Our Top 5 Spring Gardening Jobs!

The first day of Spring falls this month on Wednesday 20th March 2024, so it’s time to get your gardening gloves on, and get back into the garden! We know that it can be overwhelming knowing where to start with your gardening tasks, so we’ve created a comprehensive guide with our top 5 gardening jobs to help.

It’s important to ensure you have the correct gardening tools to give yourself the best start, so we’ve also created a fantastic guide showcasing the Essential Gardening Tools and Equipment you’ll need to carry out those important gardening tasks.

Weed & Mulch

As the soil begins to warm up, weeds will begin to sprout. It’s important to take the time to de-weed your garden so that the plants you want to thrive will have the room to do so! De-weeding your garden will also make your outdoor space look much tidier. Once you’ve done this, be sure to add a layer of mulch to your beds, borders and pots, as this will help suppress future weeds.

Prune & Fertilise Your Roses

Be sure to prune any dead or diseased rose stems that can be a result of the Winter season, and also look to prune if your rose plant is overcrowded and crossing stems, as this can hinder new growth. Once you’ve finished pruning, be sure to fertilise your rose plant to encourage new growth.

Take the Time to Carry Out Lawncare

As we say goodbye to Winter, it’s time to turn your attention to lawncare. Make sure to feed your grass with a lawn fertiliser mix, which will provide your lawn with much needed nutrients, which will help create a lush green space. We have lots of options for lawncare at Hilltop Garden Centre, so make sure you speak to the team when visiting for our recommendations!

Prepare your Garden for the Local Wildlife

There are many ways you can create a wildlife friendly garden, which will both help your local environment and also help you and your family connect to nature. Provide shelter for hedgehogs in the form of hedgehog houses, and place bug hotels in your trees so that when butterflies and bees emerge, they’ll be able to enjoy your garden all throughout the Spring season. Don’t forget about the birds! Leave lots of food so that they’ll be ready for breeding season. You’ll find everything you need to keep the birds happy within our bird care section.

Add Spring Plants to brighten your space

Enjoy instant colour that will last the whole season! Annual plants are perfect for any space as they can be planted both in planters and in the ground, and are also inexpensive – making them the perfect option for those who don’t have a lot of money to spare! Currently we have a huge amount of mixed packs which are amazing value, including 4 Pack Mixed Primroses which have been incredibly popular due to their vibrant colour. To keep your annual plants looking beautiful, be sure to deadhead spent blooms so that the plants energy can be directed towards new growth.
